Should You Rent or Buy a Fetal Monitor?

By Delia

In case you are engrossed to have a fetal heart monitor to check your baby’s health, you first need to decide whether you’re going to rent or own it.

Most fetal monitors for home use are being sold at very expensive prices; some new units even cost more than 500 U.S. dollars. On the other hand, there are models which are much cheaper but offer fewer features than the more sophisticated yet also more expensive ones. For instance, these cut-rate models have lower sound quality and can sometimes cause difficulty in detecting the heartbeat of the fetus in the abdomen.

Additionally, expensive models are known for their credibility that is attached to the brand and to the manufacturer who produced the device. According to the principle of economics, once the product gains reliability from a large portion of its intended buyers, and generates overwhelming demand from the consumers, its value increases, making the commodity more expensive. And if parents want to secure their safety, they most likely opt to purchase a product which is trusted by many despite its cost. This is to say that couples, veering away from trouble and hassle, at times decide to purchase even the expensive units, believing that fetal monitors are all about convenience and reliability.

But since these devices could be very costly, many parents decide to simply rent a unit. For families that cannot afford to purchase a monitor for home use, renting is a very good option. There are fetal heart monitor rentals that allow a couple to rent a unit for about as low as 45 U.S. dollars a month. Renting is suitable for parents who will only be using the monitor for just a few months. It gives them the privilege to use a sophisticated advanced fetal monitor at a much lower price.

Conversely, if parents think that they need these monitors for more than three months, or even for future use (especially when they plan to have another baby a year or maybe two years after), buying is still the best choice regardless of the expenses. This way, couples need not to rent every now and then which can actually give them more inconvenience and expenditures.

Also, if parents were advised by their personal doctors about the particular model of baby Doppler to use, they might find it hard to locate it in rental stations since the unit is in demand. If this is the case, then they might just decide to buy one for themselves.

Buying fetal monitors is also equipped with warranties. Unlike in rentals wherein one usually pays the rental cost and the unit itself if it breaks down, availed devices rather have warranties which will enable the consumers to ask the manufacturer to repair or replace the wrecked units.

If you are in the market for a fetal heart monitor, it is suggested that you shop online so you can see the models and be informed about the specifications, features and the usage of this device. Do not hesitate to ask questions and clarify things. The safety of the mother and the child is the most important consideration of all.
